My brother, Sean, was 19 years old and in his first year of college when he started talking nonstop and not making sense. Eventually he was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and substance use disorder...and these two illnesses together complicated his opportunities for treatment and left him feeling hopeless. He tried to take his life several times before he died of a drug overdose in 2003. He was 37.

Sean was so much more than his illness. He had an adventurous and rebellious spirit but he was also incredibly sweet, funny, and loving and had an insightful nickname for everyone he knew. He was handsome, charming and a great athlete--a left-handed pitcher who once dreamed of going pro. He played guitar, wrote music and poetry, loved his dog, gave great massages, got his real estate license and worked his 12-step program as hard as he could.

Every 13 minutes, someone dies by suicide in the United States and another 25 people attempt it. Many individuals suffer in silence. But when a person in crisis needs someone to listen and respond, Didi Hirsch's Suicide Prevention Center is here to help. In fact, nearly 87,000 children, teens and adults turned to our 24/7 English-Spanish Crisis Line last year.

Please support Didi Hirsch's 19th annual Alive & Running 5K Walk/Run for Suicide Prevention. The event will be held on Sunday, September 24, 2017 at La Tijera Parkway in Los Angeles.

Proceeds pay the salaries of Crisis Chat counselors, cover the costs of our trainings, send staffers to the scene of a suicide and fund follow-up programs for high-risk callers and people recently hospitalized for an attempt.

With your help, we are saving lives!
