Kim Kowsky

My father, Ed Kowsky, who died on Sept. 5, 2018, cared about suicide prevention for the same reason I did: his son/my brother made three serious suicide attempts before he died of a drug overdose in 2003.

I don't pretend to know the excruciating pain of losing a loved one to suicide, but I know what it's like to love, care and worry about someone who struggles with suicidal depression. I am grateful that Didi Hirsch provides services for people who are thinking about suicide and those who love and care about them.

Every suicide has a profound affect on many people: family, friends, caretakers, colleagues, acquaintances, witnesses, first responders...We can all play a role in preventing suicide by learning warning signs and how to help someone in crisis.

Please join me in supporting Didi Hirsch's 20th annual Alive & Running in honor of all those who have attempted suicide. I ask in memory of my father, who wore Sean's shoes to family milestone events, even though they were half a size too small. It was his way of remembering the son he loved, who suffered from bipolar disorder and struggled with suicidal thoughts. The shoes are too big for me, but I keep them in my closet to remember these two lovable men who taught me that sorrow, pain and loneliness are necessary companions to laughter, joy and love.
