Some of you who are close to me may know that I have three brothers with mental illnesses. One of them died from suicide. He did not take his life away. The disease took him away. Mental illness is a disease just like heart disease, cancer, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, diabetes... One of the reasons that I have been open about sharing my experience is because I would like to remove the stigma associated with mental illnesses and open the conversation. My brother hid his disease just like many others. Everyone is going through something, whether it is the passing of a loved one, a bad breakup, divorce, debilitating ailment/disease, loss of income, financial stress, job stress, struggling not being accepted or feeling different, the caring of an elderly parent.…

We need to provide a safe and non-judgmental space to those that are struggling. Everyone has different fortitude on how to cope and deal with anxiety and stress. I still mourn every day the passing of my brother and each time I hear a celebrity or a close one dying from suicide, it breaks my heart.

Mental health is as important as physical health. I am a big proponent that everyone needs to practice self-care. My yoga practice has helped me tremendously with my healing and my mental and physical health. Didi Hirsch provides some great services for those that are struggling. Their support group helped me through my healing. Every day I count how grateful I am to those that have supported me through tough periods.

In 2018, more than 47,000 people died by suicide and there were an estimated 1.4 million attempted suicide. Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the US.

I am planning to walk the Didi Hirsch Alive & Running 5K on September 29, 2019 in honor and memory of my brother Henri and all those that have struggled and died from suicide. Please join Team Henri or donate any amount.
