Please help me stop suicide by joining TEAM TOM LIND at Didi Hirsch’s 21st annual Alive & Running 5K Walk/Run for Suicide Prevention on Sunday, September 29, or donating money to help save lives.

Suicide rates nationwide have risen over 30% among almost every age group, gender, ethnicity and financial status. In 2018, more than 47,000 Americans died by suicide—more than by car accidents or homicide. And for every death by suicide, about 30 people attempt it.

Unfortunately these stats became my reality on September 24, 2018, when Tom, my beautiful husband, died by suicide. I’m still trying to process a lifetime without the man who was my world. Tom’s heart was so, so big--maybe too big. He felt the highest of highs, but also felt the lowest of the lows. Ultimately, those lows are what took him from us. Our priest called it an emotional heart attack. And that's what I've chosen to call it. Because the Tom I knew and loved would not hurt us. It could only be something so sudden as an emotional heart attack that would cause him to do this.

Since Tom's death, I've felt helpless and often hopeless, not knowing how I can help stop suicide. No one should feel that ending their life is the only option, and no one should feel the pain of losing a loved one to suicide. But I've realized there are two things I can do. I can write, and I can run. I will continue to share Tom's story in the hope that I reach someone, anyone, and help them understand that they are not alone and that it is OK to not be OK. And on Sunday, September 29, Theo and I will be running Didi Hirsch’s 21st annual Alive & Running 5K Walk/Run for Suicide Prevention.

The event supports Didi Hirsch’s Suicide Prevention Center—the first and most comprehensive in the United States. Their doors are open to anyone who has been touched to suicide—regardless of their ability to pay. But they need your help to continue providing their lifesaving services. Didi Hirsch is also where I attended a Survivors After Suicide support group that was critical in helping me/saving me as I continue to try and understand Tom's death.

So…how can you help?
1. You can register to run/walk the 5k race with me on TEAM TOM LIND. I'm hoping to gather a group of friends and family members to run in Tom's honor.

2. You can donate! Every dollar counts. I'm asking for minimum donations of $14, Tom's favorite number.

Please help me help stop suicide. By running or donating, your support helps:

- SAVE LIVES by training crisis counselors for our 24/7 multilingual Crisis Line, where calls have quadrupled in the last 10 years;

- STRENGTHEN THE SAFETY NET by teaching more students, teachers, parents, firefighters, police officers and mental health professionals to recognize and respond to warning signs;

- PROVIDE HEALING by offering more therapy and support groups to suicide attempt and loss survivors, and special groups for teens bereaved by suicide;

- ADVANCE THE FIELD by partnering with university researchers developing and testing new programs in suicide prevention.

Thank you!
