My son Michael Xavier Mendez was born February 1, 1995 and passed away March 25, 2015.

He was a wonderful, selfless human being. I remember as we were approaching the end of senior year, I questioned what would he would be doing after high school and he said he joined the Army. It was the happiest day of his life! Who would have thought that when he returned from boot camp after receiving his PFC (private first class) rank and being assigned to leave on deployment that things would change.

A month prior to his death, we had just celebrated his sister’s quinceanera. We were all very happy. Who would have thought it would be the last time we took a family picture?

I still remember the day I got the call to go home and check on him. I made a 20-minute drive in 5 minutes. By the time I got home, the fire department and paramedics were already there. As I pushed myself into my house, they told he was dead. It was the worst day of my life.

You never think it can happen to you but this can happen to anyone. Suicide knows no boundaries.

My family, his friends and I walk to bring awareness and help raise funds to get support to others and their loved ones. We want to prevent someone else from suffering the way we have.
